End of year lists are so last year (like 2017). That’s why we’ve decided to give you readers some GIFs you can really appreciate (and use!) to show you what Winnipeg has in store this winter.
So without further ado, here’s some GIFs that will keep on GIFing right through winter 2019.
Skating on the Red River Mutual Trail
Put the headphones on and channel your inner roller skater before taking it to the Red and Assiniboine Rivers for some silky skating on Red River Mutual Trail. Last year the trail reached 10 km, while all along the way you’ll encounter some of the weirdest, wackiest and sometimes profound Warming Huts that dot the icy landscape.
Hop aboard the Nonsuch
The Manitoba Museum is a treasure trove when it comes to the history (both ancient and modern) of the region. It’s most-popular attraction, the Nonsuch Gallery, is both its biggest catch and ketch, having been newly revamped along with its surrounding circa 1650’s port to offer visitors an experience that will really put the wind in their sails.
Take the Polar Bear Plunge
At Assiniboine Park Zoo’s Journey to Churchill you can watch (or be surprised by) polar bears who will take a plunge right over your head. On top of that, it’s also the world’s foremost Arctic species exhibit, featuring movie star wolves (they were on camera with Liam Neeson in The Grey), snowy owls, muskoxen, Arctic fox, and so much more.
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights’ Labyrinth
While we can’t guarantee you’ll encounter neither Jennifer Connelly nor The Goblin King, we do guarantee that Antoine Predock’s architecture within Winnipeg’s national museum, the
Canadian Museum for Human Rights, will inspire plenty of awe. The famed alabaster ramps that bring visitors from gallery to gallery are like a scene out of an Escher work.
Fat Tire biking from White Pine Bicycle Co.
You know what’s phat in winter? Fat Tire biking, particularly down the Red River Mutual Trail. While actually buying a big tire bike may be pricey, you can rent them from White Pine, conveniently located right at The Forks.
Put fun on the button
Crokicurl! Since its inception two winters ago, we’ve been trying to rename the sport to Crunk-i-curl, simply because it rocks so hard (both in the granite and figurative sense). Get a group together and head down to The Forks to enjoy this fun hybrid of curling and Crokinole, the rocks will be there waiting for you (for free too!).
He shoots, he scores!
As of this writing, the Winnipeg Jets are the top of the table in the West, and our money is on this trend not stopping. This team is stacked through and through and are surely playing some of the most exciting puck in the NHL. Plus, the atmosphere at Bell MTS Place is the best in the NHL, even better than at our beloved neighbours place south of the border in Saint Paul. Needless to say, everything about a Jets game is top shelf.
Soak it up at the spa
You can sit in thermal pools while the snow falls overhead at Thermea by Nordik Spa Nature. You can dine in your bathrobe. You can sit in a sauna while someone swishes essential oil-infused hot air at you in a Finish sauna. In other words, it’s just the best.
Light it up at The Forks
“Let there be light” – particularly on the on-land skating trails, archways, trees and more at Winnipeg’s most-visited tourist destination, The Forks. Simply put, it’s a winter wonderland that will surely light up your Instagram account.
