Our Summer Saved hosts Sarah Robinson and Cody Chomiak are cutting class and spending their “day off” at the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
With lots of space for physical distancing in new exhibits and activities, it’s the perfect place to hide from principal Rooney – see the rest of our Ferris Bueller jokes in the video below.
Joining Sarah and Cody is Catherine Maksymiuk, Head of Engagement & Advancement at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, which was one of the first major art institutions to reopen in Canada.
“We are keeping up constantly with sanitizing, following all the government guidelines, and for events we’ve implemented timed tickets as well as limiting the number of people," says Maksymiuk.
"It’s really uplifting to welcome the community back and have a great place for relaxation and fun."
Current exhibitions include Into the Light by Manitoban Group of Seven-member Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald, Prayer, a sound installation by South African artist James Webb, and many more.
Up on the rooftop is the WAG’s sculpture garden space, which has recently turned into a brand-new Rooftop Retreat offering yoga classes, film screenings, yard games and live music.
Check out the latest exhibits, then stay for one of the many events and activities including TGIF Drop-Ups and a special SMITH bar and barbecue. See the WAG's calendar for a full list of events.
Inuit Art Centre
Not only has the WAG added new additions for summer fun, but it's also working on even more add-ons for the Inuit Art Centre opening later this year.
“We’ll have a new cafe, a revamped shop on the main floor, a three-storey visible vault showcasing thousands of carvings and brand-new studios up on the penthouse level for art making,” says Maksymiuk.
“Our theme for the Inuit Art Centre is ‘Art is a Voice’ and it’s really about amplifying the voices of the artists, bringing people together throughout the universal language of art, building cultural understanding and building community in the heart of Winnipeg.”
