Folks love a good party. But they really love a party with great food, lively music and dancing to the wee hours— a fete fantastic where all the elements come together at once.
That's what Winnipeg Mardis Gras promises. And honestly, that's what it delivers. Two nights every February, the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg transforms into New Orleans on the Prairies. The music, vibe, costumes and cocktails scream Louisiana over-indulgence.
If you can't go to New Orleans for the festival of gluttony every February, well Winnipeg's version is a wee taste of the original.
In a recent party preview of this year's Winnipeg edition, PCG and other revellers got a sweet sampling of the party, complete with concocted cocktails and Louisiana food favourites.
We noshed on deep-fried pickles with cajun-spice cheese sauce; bourbon-flamed garlic pepper shrimp (my fave by far); jambalaya with shrimp, cajun sausage and grilled chicken; French Quarter gumbo; and New Orleans rosé farfalle pasta with chicken, spicy sausage and capicola.
If the advance tasting was any indication, there will be a lot of very well fed revellers on Feb. 14 and 15.
The Convention Centre's kitchen team has a fine touch with Southern culinary classics. Spice and heat is a must but the team manages to skillfully straddle the line between heat but no fire.
This year, the party falls on Valentine's Day. With love and love connections in mind, the party includes a dating game, a fashion show and gift vendors to pick up a last-minute something for your special someone.
The party also celebrates SAD (Single Awarenes Day). Singles will be given a red heart to wear (on their sleeves, perhaps) to signify their willingness to mix and mingle.
An oyster bar, a peel and eat shrimp bar, and a wine bar will be set up around the room. Specialty cocktails will also be served.
FYI: The $16 admission cost doesn't include the cost of food and alcohol. Menu items range in price from $5 to $17. A sampler platter includes four items (including alligator fritters) and sauces and costs $20.
Winnipeg Mardi Gras is an adults-only event. Ages 18 and older only.
