The future's so bright, we've got to wear shades.
Bad reference to lame pop lyrics aside, Winnipeg's 2015 food scene will be bright.
Here are five thing's PCG's excited to see in the next year.
Segovia's Adam Donnelly and his wife/business parter Carolina Konrad will open their breakfast and lunch spot in the Exchange District, hopefully by mid-year. There is no name as of yet.
Many new restaurants will open in 2015. Sherbrook Street Delicatessen, located in the former home of Fitzroy is expected to open in March. Jon Hochman, who owned Fitzroy, will helm this new 45-seat spot. Traditional Kosher cuisine including hand smoked and hand carved meats, latkes, matzo ball soup and schmaltz and gribenes, among many other authentic dishes will be served.
The Merchant, Winnipeg's first Latin-Asian strew food emporium launches this spring. Pizzeria Gusto owner Bobby Mottola and his executive chef Eric Lee are pulling the project together. Peruvian ceviches, tacos, street-meat skewers, stir fries and many shareable plates will anchor the menu. The new 140-seat fast casual spot will be found inside in the new 15-storey ALT Hotel, in the heart of downtown.
More fresh food and produce: Bring it on. Provencher Boulevard BIZ will unveil its new weekly farmers' market in 2015. The new market has been in the works since 2014 and is located at the corner of Langevin and Provencher. The BIZ built a fully wired cement pad for its merchants. No word yet on which day or days of the week the market will run. The additional of a farmers' market is one more step in the evolution of the lively neighbourhood. The St. Boniface market, like all the neighbourhood markets that have popped up in the last few years, is great for Winnipeg and its citizens.
Please throw more great food and cultural events Charcoal Collaborative. This small but crazily creative group are the folks behind Burger Week and the newly minted Poutine Cup. The cup, created by Promenade Café's Shawn Brandson, was a huge success. A sell-out crowd of 400 went on a fries and curds binge at Fort Gibraltar, scarfing back the fast food created by a dozen local chefs. In December 2014, the group also hosted Soul Supper Club, a soul-food and soulful music party at Maw's Eatery in the Exchange District. Live hip hop and a menu of New Orleans' fare fed a massive crowd. We can't wait to see what they do in 2015.
