The life of a professional eater has its challenges. Bad meals, dreadful service and dirty dining rooms top the list. In Winnipeg, those big three no-nos are thankfully few and far between.
The fourth problem is harder to avoid: Gaining weight.
That problem would be solved with one simple sentence: "No dessert for me, thank you."
Not easier said and definitely not always done.
Dessert is hard to resist at the best of times. When your job is to taste food and try new restaurants, dessert is an important component of the experience.
In Winnipeg, talent abounds in pastry chef circles. The city is home to a roster of creative sugar, chocolate and confection artists who continue to dazzle diners with their takes on the final course.
Over the past several years I have nibbled fantastic cakes, tortes, donuts, macarons, chocolates, ice cream, profiteroles, tiramisu, cookies and cheesecakes.
Some of my most memorable desserts can be found at Tea Story; Prairie Ink Restaurant; Fusion Grill; Segovia Tapas Bar and Restaurant; Piazza de Nardi; and L'Epi de Blé.
In the meantime, here's a small visual sampling of my sweet journey and a few places to indulge in dessert.
