Dessert Sinsations: Global food festival
Address: 505B St. Mary Avenue
If culinary adventures to the far corners of the globe aren't in your near future, Dessert Sinsations has a plan.
From now until February 28, the downtown eatery is hosting Taste the Globe, a mini-food festival celebrating international cuisine and the upcoming winter Olympics.
For $28 per person, diners can indulge in their choice of three, three-course dinners.
The themed dinners include homages to Russian, Indian and Caribbean cuisine.
Here are the menus:
Rustic Russian Plates
Beet borscht; Russian Tea Room beef and mushroom stroganoff with buttery broad noodles or rice; and walnut, poppy seed Russian king cake with butter honey glaze and caramel creme.
Flavour of India
Grilled eggplant and tomato garlic dip with warm naan; butter chicken and rice pilaf; mango, coconut, cashew and cardamom phyllo with saffron and vanilla ice cream.
Caribbean Islands Cuisine
Crab cakes with island mango, cilantro ad citrus salsa, roasted pepper aioli; scotch bonnet jerk chicken, red and black bean rice, Jamaican slaw; coconut lime cheesecake with white Callebaut chocolate infused with creme anglais.
For Dessert Sinsations neophytes, this bright downtown eatery redefines casual cuisine. The setting and decor is warm, inviting and lacking pretension. The menu, however, reflects a deep and devoted appreciation and understanding of what makes food fantastic. Chef/owner Barbara O'Hara has the magic touch. She elevates burgers, wraps, salads and breakfast fare with made-in-Manitoba touches and in-season ingredients. O'Hara is an enthusiastic devotee of Winnipeg's food scene and is an influential booster and ambassador for local talent.
The menu has vegetarian and gluten-free options that don't scrimp on taste.
If you haven't had a chance to dine at Barbara's, Taste the Globe is a great chance to give it a try.
