The Woman Upstairs by Claire Messud
Nora Eldridge, once dreamed of being an artist, a wife, and a mother. Instead, due to caring for her aging parents and other concerns, she has ended up a single, middle-aged woman with a career as an elementary school teacher until Sirena, an Italian artist invites her to share her studio space and return to her work as an artist. Emotionally and intellectually complex, The Woman Upstairs offers a fresh take on the themes of appearance and reality; deception and betrayal; identity, self-expression and exploration. Come prepared to discuss the book as a group and explore several works from the In Studio exhibition that relate to the narrative and more generally the theme of the artist's studio.

Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides

Middlesex is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel whose characters and events are loosely based on aspects of Eugenides' life and observations of his Greek heritage. The book centers on the pursuit of the American Dream and explores gender identity while offering allusions to Greek mythology, including creatures such as the Minotaur, half-man and half-bull, and the Chimera, a monster composed of various animal parts. Come prepared to discuss the book as a group and explore Norval Morriseau's monumental painting, Androgyny that relates to the narrative and more generally the theme of gender expression and identfication.
