Wolseley Farmers' Market is more than just farm-fresh vegetables. Pick up a jar of freshly harvested Manitoba honey
It may not have everything you need, but it will have something you want.
That's the beauty of Wolseley Farmers' Market.
Whether it's lovingly decorated cupcakes, farmer dirt-fresh carrots or spritely rhubarb cordial, it's hard to leave the pocket-sized market empty handed. It's a neighbourhood gem that's worth driving across town for.
Make no mistake, it's a one-stop market selling everything you need for tonight's dinner table—veggies, salad, breads, desserts—except the meat.
Hosting perhaps just a dozen vendors, the market runs every Tuesday and Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. throughout summer and well into fall.
The market, located at Robert A. Steen Community Centre just southwest of downtown, is a treasure for foodies yearning for peak-fresh produce.
The new market launched in early June and will run until November 1.
Meanwhile in other food news, a team of city firefighters will go head-to-head in the 5 Alarm Firefighters Cook Off 2012, a bragging-rights cooking competition on Sunday, August 19 in Winnipeg.
The firefighters' recipes, included charbroiled Argentinean strip loin, baked Alaska, jambalaya and firehall chili dip.
Proceeds from the firefighters' cook off go to burn research at the Health Sciences Centre. Online voting closes Aug. 8. The top-five finalists will serve their recipes for a panel of judges on Sunday Aug. 19 at the Winnipeg BBQ & Blues Festival.
The new festival, which was announced earlier this year, runs Aug. 17 to 19 at the Red River Exhibition Park, just west of the Winnipeg's Perimeter on Portage Avenue. The weekend-long party includes performances by blues legend Jimmy Vaughan and local star Big Dave Maclean. Also on tap: The Pit Masters Championship, a Kansas City-sanctioned BBQ competition with a $10,000 purse, the largest pool of winnings ever for a BBQ contest in Canada.
The winner gets an invitation to the Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational Barbecue Competition in Lynchburg, Tennessee.
