Last week, we had the pleasure of taking a Splash Dash River Tour, a guided 30-minute boat ride down the Red and Assiniboine Rivers. Leaving from The Forks harbour every 15 minutes from 10 am until sunset, they are a fabulous way to see an often inaccessible part of the city.
Your tour guide will give you some of the tidbits of history and lore that run down the river, including everything from floods to figures of importance. (There's a little to a lot of humour thrown in for fun as well.)
You'll start at The Forks and make your way past the trees and past the Manitoba Legislature. I loved seeing the often-overlooked back of the building and Louis Riel statue. Sometime you forget he's standing back there, his stern visage keeping watch over our city (probably making sure don't get into any more trouble than he caused once-upon-a-time).
Then you'll turn around and head up the other way, taking a trip under the Esplanade Riel and past the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Bring your cameras people (like the good one--not just your cell phone), the photo opps are pretty much endless here.
You'll finish up with a trip past Waterfront Drive where the city is growing. Get a sneak peek at the new hotel and restaurant going up and the beautiful condo buildings already lining the way.
I just love seeing the city from this point of view. It's truly a stunning to see the river and the trees and the bright blue prairie sky all come together like this.
