One of downtown Winnipeg’s most radiant hidden gems is the rooftop pool at Delta Hotels by Marriott Winnipeg.
Available exclusively for hotel guests, this chic setting called the Outdoor Blu Deck feature’s the city’s plushiest loungers (they even have ones with built-in retractable sun covers!), an outdoor bar, a tidy and tasty menu of small plates, and poolside views featuring some of the city’s tallest towers.
It’s such a smart setting –– whether you’re looking to lounge in your bathing suit with a book, or you are looking to make a splash under the sunny skies –– and it’s only available to Delta Hotel guests, which is your ultimate downtown Winnipeg summer hotel as you’ll read below:
Location, location, location… with so many events and options just steps away
Delta Hotels Winnipeg is downtown’s largest four-star hotel.
Its location couldn’t be any more central, given it is directly connected to both the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg and Canada Life Centre. Most of its rooms have outdoor balconies that either look north toward True North Square and historic St. Mary’s Cathedral, or south overtop of the Outdoor Blu Deck, putting you right in the action.
It’s only a two-block walk from WAG-Qaumajuq, where numerous rooftop parties and events surrounding the Riopelle exhibit are being held this summer. For concerts, you’re just steps from watching, Neil Young (July 17), Ludacris (August 1), Billy Idol (August 6) Cage the Elephant (August 10), and Hozier (August 20) this summer at Canada Life Centre.
Before or after a show, you have your choice of countless restaurants, bars and pubs in the surrounding area – all of which are just steps from the lobby.
This includes the Thomas Hinds Sampling Room (a favourite for locals, and connected directly to the hotel); Ichiban Japanese Steakhouse (a famous teppanyaki joint connected to the hotel that’s been making crowds cheer for onion volcanoes for more than 50 years!); Hargrave Street Market with its multiple food kiosks, Lake of the Woods Brewing Company and Rosé Bar; Affinity Garden (for excellent vegan Chinese cuisine); La Roca with its rooftop patio, margaritas and tacos; Capital Grill with its well-executed Americana cuisine; LGBTQ hotspot Club 200; and Devil May Care Brewery for casual drinks.
Plus, the Delta is only a five to 10-minute walk to other major attractions like The Forks, the Manitoba Legislative Grounds, Portage and Main, and The Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
The amenities (including a staff that’s guaranteed to impress)
Before we get into it, just check out all these four and five-star Google reviews. Go through and you’ll note a constant theme of “friendly attentive staff” and comments like, “service has been incredible from start to finish.” You’ll read numerous mentions of the comfortable beds, excellent onsite snack and restaurant amenities, great pools, plus that location that can’t be beat.
Before we get into everything amazing about the Outdoor Blu Deck, we should note that it’s not the only celebrated amenity at the Delta.
For starters, you can make a splash inside at its well-appointed Odyssey Pool with its indoor pool, whirlpool and kids’ pool. This area also features the full-service Odyssey Fitness Centre featuring cardio machines, weights, locker rooms and towel service.
In your room you’ll find heated tile floors in the bathrooms, outstanding views and outdoor balconies in most units, work stations, coffee and tea makers, and nice robes. There’s underground parking (with valet optional), room service, and whirlpools in select suites.
For dining, the hotel’s Blaze Bistro has always been noted for its Canadiana cuisine, with all the breads, spreads, sauces, sausages, pickles and lox made and/or cured in the Delta kitchen. It’s the sort of spot that’s great for a pre-concert burger that’s been ground in house (a classic 60/40 brisket-chuck mix, seared hard and juicy throughout) paired with a local beer.
For fun starters at Blaze look to a trio of mini Yorkshire puddings filled with shaved roast beef and horseradish aioli or the crispy Brussel sprouts with nuoc cham chili crunch and crackling pork belly. Robust mains include crispy skin half chicken with fondant potatoes and pan juices, and ricotta gnocchi with mushrooms and truffle. There’s also plenty of big salads too.
Blaze is open at 6:30 a.m. on weekdays, and 7 a.m. on weekends, offering classic scratch-made breakfast dishes like eggs Benedict with house-cured bacon, corned beef hash (brisket made in house), plus lighter fare like granola with fresh fruit and other staples.
What’s new on the Outdoor Blu Deck
Delta Hotels Winnipeg’s outdoor pool area is now open until September 15th for guests to use.
As you'll see on its glam menu, the canned cocktails run from Olé Margaritas (they have the zero proof version too) and White Claws to Jameson Ginger & Lime, Mott’s Caesars, and Georgian Bay Gin Smash. You can get either a 6 or 9 oz pour of wine, with Chile’s Tantehue wineries featured with its sauv blanc and rosé, and the very soft, pleasant and summery Il Padrino Rosso (a Sangiovese blend) for the red. Local cans (473 ml) of beer include Half Pints’ Bikey McBike Face radler, and Trans Canada’s Flying Otter Light Lager and Bluebeary ale.
For dishes, there are mini shrimp rolls served on buttered buns like a lobster roll, with shrimp salad filling, dill and a housemade mayo to bind it altogether (choice of fries of salad as a side). The confit duck summer rolls feature vermicelli, carrot, cabbage, cilantro and hoisin rolled in a rice paper with classic nouc cham for dipping, and the pork tacos come on white corn tortillas with pulled pork, mango BBQ sauce, pineapple salsa and pickled jalapeño. For snacky things, hit up the parmesan fries (cooked in beef tallow), the warm olives (served with housemade kettle chips), or the creamy buratta with confit cherry tomatoes and grilled focaccia (yes, also baked fresh daily in the Delta kitchen) as a vessel.
