Your guide to Manitoba Culture Days in Winnipeg

Get ready for three weeks of celebrating creativity everywhere

By: Only in the Peg // September 22, 2022 // Architecture & Design, Attractions, Family Fun, Festivals & Events, Live Music, Nightlife, Performing Arts

Culture Days is about to kick off a multi-week celebration from September 23 to October 16, 2022, with thousands of free arts and culture events happening across Canada, including Winnipeg.

The festivities include visual arts, heritage, Indigenous arts and traditional practices, cross-cultural activities, educational tours, community street festivals, collective art-making projects and so much more. With everything going on, we are taking a page from Culture Days’ own website breaking down the events “Hubs” and where you can find them.

Nuit Blanche Winnipeg (September 24, 2002, 6:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.)

The Winnipeg creative community’s biggest one-night celebration is back! Nuit Blanche takes place throughout some of Winnipeg's most vibrant and diverse neighbourhoods like The Forks, the West End, The Exchange District, Saint-Boniface and downtown.

You can join an estimated 25,000 people interacting with innovative installations, reveling at parties and happenings and just generally having a fantastic time at more than 40 creative events–all of which are free! Walking, rolling, biking or hopping on the Winnipeg Trolley is highly encouraged.

Some of our local taprooms have fun things going on like Little Brown Jug Brewing hosting a late-night street party with artists and DJs, Nonsuch Brewing is celebrating its birthday with food and drink specials, a patio party and for one night only, Nonsuch Brewing will also transform its production space into a light spectacle. The Beer Can Presents: The Gas Station Patio will be hosting special performances by superstar Eve Rice and DJ JPQ presenting the finest in art crawl party jams.

Though the direct translation of Nuit Blanche is “white night,” the context of the French translation means “a sleepless night” and a sleepless night it will be! Here's the map to start planning your route or don’t plan, just wing-it. That’s one of the best parts about exploring these venues that are near each other.

Winnipeg Public Libraries

Another “Hub” for Culture Days will be located at various Winnipeg Library locations. There is such a diverse mix of topics and exhibits to visit, including The Architecture of Max Blankstein–one of the first Jewish architects in Canada who designed many Winnipeg theatres, to the Assiniboia Indian Residential School Exhibit which tells the hidden history and stories of some of the graduates and Survivors from the Residential School that used to be on Academy Road.

From culinary and crafts to gardening, dance and music, there is sure to be an exhibit that speaks to you. It also doesn’t hurt to give your local library some love.

Outside the Lines Student Programming 2022

Manitoba Culture Days also offers virtual student programming where classrooms and schools are invited to join various online workshops to celebrate arts education.

Thanks to digital programming, this is a great opportunity for students to engage with people from all around the province and learn about interesting subjects like stop motion animation, beadwork by Indigenous artists, music rhythms and teamwork.

These workshops will be held from September 23 to October 16, 2022.

La Maison des artistes

Visit La Maison des artiste visuels francophone in the heart of Saint-Boniface and engage in a multi-cultural dialogue about minority communities, identity and a sense of place.

There are interactive events like Send+Recieve, an international festival of experimental music and sound art and La Plume et le pinceau, a creative improvisation activity organized by the Association of Francophone Manitoba Authors (AAMF) between three writers and three visual artists.

Downtown Culture Days

Downtown Winnipeg will be celebrating Culture Days from October 1 to October 8, 2022, with free art, music, dance, workshops, events, markets and experiences at featured downtown destinations. You will find a street artist at each location creating a floating mural. Some of the locations include The Forks, Stephen Juba Park along Waterfront Drive, Old Market Square in the Exchange District, Chinatown and Hargrave Street Market.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Culture Days has set September 30, 2022 aside to create space exclusively for events organized to commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, including those aimed at sharing First Nations, Métis, and/or Inuit experiences and perspectives celebrating the creative and cultural expressions of Indigenous people and communities.
