Welcome 2021! Many of us were waiting for 2020 to end and are welcoming the new year with open arms. After a restful and low-key holiday season, I was ready to get out and start tackling my resolutions for the year, however, there was one major hurdle in my way... is COVID over yet?
I may not be able to get out and tackle EVERYTHING on my list just yet, but I thought I’d focus on one resolution in particular—finding creative ways to spend time at home. That’s when I heard about Date Night Delivered.
Megan Parsons created the concept in an attempt to “bring the excitement back to date nights.” Whether you are a relatively new couple looking for a fun way to get to know each other or have been together for 14 years (like my husband and me), Date Night Delivered is the perfect remedy to zhuzh up your time spent at home (and in my case, get a head start on those new year’s resolutions).
When ordering your box, you have the option of regular or deluxe, with the deluxe including a light dinner. The boxes are delivered on the third or fourth Friday of every month and come complete with games or activities, recipes, a custom playlist, local products, decorations, and an after-dark game.
Fast forward to Friday night. My husband and I receive our “Cozy In” themed box and are ready to dive in. The first thing we notice is a little booklet that acts as your instruction manual. Now, this is where my husband and I differ—while he starts rummaging through the box, I diligently start reading the booklet page by page. It includes a QR code to download your playlist, a step-by-step evening layout (including recommendations on what to wear), recipes, and even tips on how to reuse some of the items in your box.
While my husband gets the playlist going and mixes up some cocktails, I set the scene. We choose our living room as the date night site, grabbing some pillows, blankets and supplied fairy lights, and start building a fort. Yes, you read correctly, we got to build an adult-sized fort! I believe the last time I built a fort was at Camp Arnes circa 1995.
Once we have completed our masterpiece (and a masterpiece it is), we light our Coal and Canary candle (also supplied) and take out the stunning charcuterie board from @theboardwpg (supplied in the deluxe box). We are all set to play the first game.
So here we are, 30-something-year-olds (I will leave our exact ages a mystery) sitting in a twinkling fort in our living room, sipping on Paper Planes, and listening to “All of Me” by John Legend, and I’m thinking, “This is the most creative date night we’ve had in the past year! Maybe we stop here and just enjoy this moment?” But my husband loves games, so we pull out the “Most Likely To” game out of the box.
We take turns reading the cards and vote on who is most likely to do each scenario. Whoever has the most cards at the end of the game, wins. Now as you can imagine, there was a fair share of debates as to who was deserving of certain cards, but in the end, I took “Most likely to eat only BDI ice cream for the two days” for the win.
The next activity was building your love story. The box came complete with a scrapbook album, stickers, glue stick, and prompts; everything you could possibly need. We found ourselves digging in our drawers for old concert tickets, photos, and other things that tell the story of our relationship. Slightly cheesy? Perhaps. A really fun and cute way to recount the past 14 years? Absolutely.
The last portion of the evening was dessert and an after-dark game, including locally made Utoffeea and a fun game to spice up the evening. #Oohlala
Date Night Delivered has certainly checked off all the boxes. A fun way to spend an evening at home? Check. New Year’s resolution tackled? Check. Great way to support local? Check. Great way to laugh and spend some quality time with your partner? Definitely check.
