Transcona

Transcona

The name "Transcona" was chosen to commemorate the Grand Trunk Railway to which the town owes its existence. Today, a visit to Transcona is a trip back in time to the glory of the railroad. Giant murals beautify downtown and a locally constructed steam locomotive is on display in Kiwanis Park.

The Transcona Historical Museum is the only designated historic building in the neighbourhood. Here, you can learn the stories and history behind this vibrant community with an extensive collection of relics, photography and documents. Exhibits feature railway artifacts, clothing and household objects, along with 1,000 Manitoba bird eggs and 3,500 aboriginal artifacts that were found in Manitoba.

A handful of incredible local eateries have recently opened shop in Transcona, including Nuburger, serving up gourmet burgers and the best yam fries in the city, and GaiJin Izakaya, the newest Japanse tapas spot from chef Ed Lam. To experience a true Transcona institution, check out Whistle Pig Drive-Inn for out-of-this-world chili cheese dogs, deep-fried pickles, battered mushrooms, generous portions of hand-cut fries and other burger joint fare.

Serving the northeast corner of the city, Kildonan Place is the city’s third largest mall. Alongside the mall on Regent Avenue are dozens of box stores, thrift shops, and dining opportunities. For locally-made goods, you can stock up on local produce, crafts, jams, jellies and other farm fresh food at Transcona BIZ Market, held each Thursday throughout summer.

Feeling lucky? Head over to Club Regent Casino and try your hand at poker, strike it rich at one of 900 slot machines or get ready to dab and yell BINGO. The newly developed Club Regent Event Centre also headlines some of the biggest comedy and musical acts in the city.

The Hi Neighbour Festival is a giant annual carnival that takes place in the heart of Transcona, usually in early June. Live entertainment, a parade, children’s entertainers, fireworks, a petting zoo, face painting and other activities offer plenty of family enjoyment.

A pond, soccer pitch, playground, off-leash dog park and wide open spaces are what draws locals to Kilcona Park. You can enjoy the walking paths or put down a blanket and have a picnic. Nearby, you’ll find beautiful Harbour View Golf Course, and farther east is Transcona Golf Club, a semi-private course suitable for all level of players.
