Mere-ly the best -

Mere-ly the best

Mere-ly the best

By: Only in the Peg // January 20, 2014 // Accommodations

This weekend we got a rare and much needed evening away from Lil' Peg when me and Mister checked into the new Mere Hotel on the Waterfront on Friday night. This sleek, no-frills space charmed us from the get go with its fun touches and modern sophistication.

We brought along a few friends and were pleasantly surprised to see how all our rooms differed. Each having a different theme colour and pattern on the wallpaper. What a welcome change from the usual cookie cutter rooms most people are used to.

The rooms offer up giant TVs on swivelling arms so you never have to lift your head to watch properly, beautiful views of the snowy river and bustling Waterfront Drive and, proving they thought of everything, wine glasses with a cork screw. I don't think I've ever been in a hotel where I didn't have to call down for these (vital) items.

The towels were lushly, ridiculously soft and the shower so luxurious, especially when combined with divine smelling Molton Brown bath products (it's fancy stuff from London--it's good, trust me). The hotel exemplified its boutique moniker at ever turn--even eschewing those pesky walls around the bathroom in exchange for floor to ceiling glass that makes the space feel huge and airy.

(Fair warning: be sure you and your hotel partner are comfy with each other as the blinds used to cover the bathroom windows are on the sheer side, leaving little to the imagination. It's perfect for solo travellers and romantic nights out.)

For dinner, we walked over to the nearby Cibo (just a few steps--we didn't even need our coats) where the cozy, rustic interior awaited. Featuring modern Italian food with a twist, it was a dinner filled with beef bourguignon poutine, risotto balls, mushroom and goat cheese bruschetta, a monster burger and fries, chocolate beer (oh yes) and clever cocktails made with thyme and raspberry juice.

At bed time, we both slept like babies on the soft mattress and pillows. It's rare I get such a good night's sleep in a hotel room. Despite its modern edge, the rooms still feel cozy and comfortable.

In the morning, we took advantage of our prime location in the Exchange District and headed over to The Forks for breakfast and coffee.

It was the perfect night out.
