Folklorama Wrap Up -

Folklorama Wrap Up

Folklorama Wrap Up

By: Only in the Peg // August 16, 2013 // Festivals & Events

During the past two weeks, Winnipeg has become even more of a cultural mecca than it is on a regular day. Folklorama celebrates its closing this weekend with the food, fun and adventure it is famous for.

This multicultural event has it all--in one night you can sample delectable butter chicken from India, tap your toes to the beat of Irish dancers in Ireland or knock back a cold cerveza in Mexico. Spanning two weeks, Folklorama brings together a total of 46 pavilions (divided into 23 per week) scattered across the city as local citizens dive into their cultures.

At each pavilion you'll find cultural displays, delicious food, local libations, song, dance, music and art. Volunteers are warm, welcoming and friendly and are there to show you a great time.

The other night we had the pleasure of attending the Hungarian Pavilion where we dove into chicken paprika, Hungarian wine and Hungary's version of  a Beaver Tail--namely a huge deep fried pancake covered in icing sugar.

As we munched on our food, we were treated to traditional dances, including a rather impressive display of balancing jugs of wine on the dancer's heads.

After that, we headed to Israel where there was some more wine along with falafels and hummus. The slick entertainment was a highlight of the festival when the Chai Folk Ensemble performed with a live band, stunning costumes and beautiful choreography.

There are a few days left to get in on the fun so check out the website and be sure to create your own international adventure.
