There is so much going on during Manito Ahbee (September 9-13) that we barely know where to start!
So, before we do, let's give you a little background:
Manito Ahbee is celebrating 10 years, and has attracted over 200,000 participants and visitors in that time.
It is open to everyone, promoting the unity of all nations on Turtle Island. You don't have to be indigenous to attend any of the events, and it is a great way to learn about customs and histories; in fact, you are encouraged to ask questions as Manito Ahbee is all about the sharing of cultures.
This is most evident at its two flagship events, those being the Indigenous Music Awards (formerly the Aboriginal People's Choice Music Awards) and the International Pow Wow.
The International Pow Wow & Trade Show, which takes place Saturday and Sunday at the MTS Centre, is an enthralling experience (as you can see above from last year's Cree Travellers in the Men's Fancy). Over the course of two days you'll witness over 800 dancers while feeling the pounding of drums from over 20 groups from across North America.
Some of the dances will be social dances -- which means audience participation is welcome, but there is also a lot of competition to be had, with world champions competing in distinct dance categories. To learn more about the Pow Wow, check out this article in the Metro, which details some of the history and provides etiquette for first timers.
Last year's Pow Wow (Dan Harper)
Before the Pow Wow starts at 1 p.m. (with the Grand Entry) you should be sure to check out the Getting Jiggy With It Metis Music and Dance Showcase, which starts at 10 a.m. If you haven't seen jigging before then you are in for a real treat; there will be some incredible footwork on display, along with some intense fiddle playing.
And of course, the Trade Show that takes place throughout these two days features great food and gifts from nations all across North America.
Tickets are only $10 for individual days, and can be purchased here via ticketmaster.
Last year's Aboriginal People's Choice Music Awards at the MTS Centre (Dan Harper)
The Indigenous Music Awards take place on Friday night, also at the MTS Centre. The event kicks off at 6 p.m. with APTN Live from the Red Carpet, where you'll get to see some of the biggest and best indigenous artists up close.
The show itself will feature fourteen music categories (with nine Manitoba artists nominated) -- ranging from Single of the Year, to Best Folk/Acoustic, to Best Hand Drum, along with live performances that are guaranteed to be rocking.
Manito Ahbee kicks off at The Forks on Wednesday, Sept. 9, with the lighting of the Sacred Fire at the Oodena Circle. There will be also be an Ignite Your Spirit Showcase on Thursday and Friday from 9:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, while many other family events take place throughout the five days.
