Coal and Canary Candle Company x Winnipeg: Made from what's real

Introducing the new scent of Winnipeg with notes of amberwoods, musk and oakmoss

By: Emily Palmer // June 16, 2022

Ah, the sweet smell of success!

What started as a fun hobby between two friends, Coal and Canary Candle Company has lit up the scented candle-making industry within Winnipeg and across Canada.

The idea behind Coal and Canary first sparked (no pun intended) in owner Amanda Buhse’s kitchen, where she and her previous business partner experimented with unique scents and hand-poured wax.

Eight years later, Coal and Canary hosts their flagship store in The Forks Market, selling candles made with vegan soy, vegetable wax and wood-wicks to diffuse the most charming scents across any room.

This is the type of authentic origin story that contributes to our city’s new place brand, “Winnipeg: Made from what’s real”.

“I choose to have my company here in Winnipeg because the community is so supportive. I think that our company would not be where it is today if we were in any other city in the world," says Amanda Buhse, owner of Coal and Canary.

To amplify the new Winnipeg story, we partnered with a series of local businesses like Coal and Canary to introduce the city’s new place brand. They reflect the narrative of Winnipeg, its people and the innovation that contributes to our growing economy.

Coal and Canary’s team worked collaboratively to create a scent inspired by the new story of Winnipeg, using notes of amberwoods, musk and oakmoss. This scent aims to showcase the interconnectivity of our city and of course our combination of seasons.

Winnipeg is host to a warm and supportive network, and it comes as no surprise that Coal and Canary has transformed into a local blazing business. Winnipeggers are experts when it comes to celebrating budding local businesses and never fail to cheerlead the entrepreneurship that lights the path for our growing economy.

The Coal and Canary x Winnipeg: Made from what’s real candle is available for purchase here!
