Shop and support local this Black Friday (and Saturday)

By: Only in the Peg // November 25, 2021 // Shopping

Black Friday is here and so is Small Business Saturday. Small Business Saturday is the day after Black Friday where locals are encouraged to shop from businesses in their community. Of course, we think you should shop local all year round, too!

We've curated a list of fabulous local Winnipeg businesses that should cover everyone on your list, even for the person who has everything. Here's a chance to get your holiday shopping done early and support our local makers at the same time.

Local favourites who are going all-out for Black Friday

Immerse yourself in arts and culture at the Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG) and shop for holiday presents while you’re there. If you’re looking for something unique to give your artsy loved one, WAG's gift shop is brimming with beautiful items they will love. You can also shop for some WAG items online.

Looking for great deals on Nonsuch necklaces, Oscardi mugs, mini science experiment kits and more? The Manitoba Museum Shop’s Black Friday sale is here and has something for everyone. Head over to the museum from November 26 to 28, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; members receive 60 per cent off and the general public gets 50 per cent off.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is also a great place to shop for local finds. The Museum Boutique is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday. it also offer online shopping through its website.

Sport beautiful Manitobah Mukluks and get a few more pairs for your loved ones with their Black Friday sale. You can get discounts up to 50 per cent off.

Made Here, located in the underground concourse below the Richardson Building at Portage and Main, is also offering Manitoba-made options beautifully boxed and ready for delivery or pickup. Your favourite family members will thank you and so will local makers. You can also buy pre-made boxes or create your own, filled with all Manitoba makers.

Black Market Provisions has also created some curated gift boxes and care packages that will wow your loved ones.

Taradavis.ca in our fabulous Exchange District is always looking for "delightful goodies made with love in Canada by more than 100 dreamers and makers," so check out and support this beautiful gift and art boutique. She is also putting together great gift box ideas for the holiday season.

For the fashionista on your list, here are some luxe looks from local designers.

If Raber Gloves aren't a staple in your winter wardrobe, they should be! They have been in business for 80 years in Winnipeg and there's a good chance that someone in your family owns a pair of their world-renowned Garbage Mitts. You can find them at various stores throughout the city including Winnipeg Outfitters.

Give the gift of relaxation

Who doesn’t need a spa day?

The Riverstone Spa at the Inn at the Forks are offering hot deals for Black Friday, including discounts in-store and online, and giveaways. It has a promotion where for every $250 gift card you buy, you get another $50 gift card for free.

Ten Spa at the Fort Garry Hotel also has gift cards available. From facial and massage packages to couple’s retreats and mud parties, you’re sure to find a rejuvenating experiences for yourself, family and friends.

Another spa here to help Winnipeggers unwind and destress is Thermëa by Nordic-Spa Nature. Check out the holiday packages it is offering, including an Experience Package, Gourmet Package and more.

For a full listing of Winnipeg spas, almost all of which offer gift cards, check out our Spas Page.

Give the gift of sustainability

Make Mother Earth happy with presents that are sustainable and environmentally friendly. Our friends from Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC) crafted a well thought-out gift guide for the sustainable and eco-conscious Winnipegger.

Refilling old containers is a great way to reduce our carbon footprint, and what better way to encourage sustainability than gifting presents from local refillable businesses such as Planet Pantry, Refill Market, and Generation Green.

Fetchlocal.ca is offering gift-giving options individually or in packages while promoting locally and ethically made products with a focus on environmental sustainability. Delivery costs range from free to additional costs for expedited shipping.

Snuggle up on your sofa and shop from home

Who says you need to leave your home to support local this Black Friday and Small Business Saturday? Grab your mobile device (if you aren’t holding it already) and add these made in MB goodies in your cart.

If you didn't manage to get tickets to one of the local holiday markets this year, here's a list of websites that give you that same experience, just from the comfort of your couch: Prairie Flavours, The Locals, Love Local Manitoba and Shop Local.

Co-created by former Blue Bomber-turned-entrepreneur Obby Khan, goodlocal.ca is a one-stop-shop for people to buy all things made here. Pick and buy your favourite made-in-Manitoba items from clothing designers to home decor, and health and beauty.

This gift-giving season don’t forget to spread the love and shop local.
