For those at home with kiddos, we know it isn’t easy to come up with new ideas for “quarantainment” on top of your regular parenting and (potential) working/homeschooling routine.
Fortunately, we’ve rounded up two lists (you can read part one here) of fun for the whole family thanks to creative local residents, businesses and attractions that will make you appreciate even more how we can still be #WPGTogether even when we’re apart.
Colourful cookies
Local nut-free bakery Sweet Impressions is packaging unique cookie decorating kits to keep the budding baker in your life busy. Kits include cookies, icing and decorations – available for delivery or curbside pickup.
Game ON!
Winnipeggers love their board games – the gaming experts at Kite and Kaboodle, A Muse N Games, GameKnight Games and Cool Stuff, and Across the Board Cafe are ready to lend their expertise and help you find that next great game that won’t leave your family bored (board? Bad pun). Check with each store (links supplied above) for their pick up and delivery options.
Knit kit
Get cozied up with the kids and learn a new hobby -- Wolseley Wool is offering “Stay Home” kits. Among the packages is a “learn to knit” kit, which includes two balls of yarn, a set of needles and instructions on how to get started. Available for pick up and delivery.
All the stories
There are numerous ways to connect through the power of storytelling. For a daily dose of fun, Winnipeg comedian Big Daddy Tazz is reading to kids at 10:30 a.m. via facebook live.
Got a City of Winnipeg library card? Dive into the digital library which is available 24/7 and where you can access downloadable eBooks and eAudiobooks, eMagazines and newspapers, and stream movies and music.
And if you’re looking to update your own home libraries, consider putting an order in with your local independent bookstore – Canadian treasure McNally Robinson offers multiple ways to get your family some fresh reads.
A free Gem and other Winnipeg screen adventures
For some Winnipeg screen time, download CBC’s Gem app to access hundreds of TV, movies and live shows for free, including ad-free kid shows, (plus content for adults including Winnipeg Comedy Festival; A Dore to Winnipeg; Prairie Sky, Winnipeg; and Pharoah Moans, Winnipeg.)
We’ve also written an article about the many movies/tv shows filmed in Winnipeg for your viewing pleasure.
Online classes/groups for new mamas
For those of you craving connection and looking for an online village with other new or expecting mamas during this challenging time, check out Nest Family Centre’s online classes and discussion groups from breastfeeding support to a home organization workshop to prenatal classes.
LEGO Justin
If you haven’t seen this viral video yet (made by Tourism Winnipeg's own in-house digital content marketing manager), round up the entire fam to watch this creative stop-action LEGO video about COVID-19. In March 2020, during one of his daily press conferences, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a message for Canadian children about how they can do their part in the fight against COVID-19. In LEGO form, it’s a version that all kids will want to watch.
