Retrospective of selected works, collected along the portage of life. Dave Maddocks was born in Trenton, Ontario in 1962. He grew up in Montreal, Prince Edward Island and Winnipeg, where he earned a degree in Advertising Art from Red River College. He worked in the private sector as an artistic director, then as a high school art teacher, until his untimely death in early 2020. Dave wanted to combine his skills as a graphic designer with his purely artistic ambitions. He explained it like this: “I try to convey what I see as accurately as possible. I don't draw or paint from memory or based on a photo, because I don't trust either method. “For me, the best way for people to put themselves in my shoes is by striving to establish direct access between the subject and the painting. The starting point is the light which illuminates the subject, then which bounces up to my gaze, which then uses the means it deems appropriate to fix the scene: pencil, oil paint, watercolor…”
