WATCH: Follow your nose to Famena's Famous Roti/Curry - Mohamad and Famena Ally during lunch service (Tyler Walsh)

Mohamad and Famena Ally during lunch service (Tyler Walsh)

WATCH: Follow your nose to Famena's Famous Roti/Curry

By: Tyler Walsh (video) and Mike Green (host/scribe) // November 21, 2019 // Caribbean, Latin American, South American

Since 2010 Downtown Winnipeg has been bathed in enticing aromas that flow from 295 Garry Street, the home of Famena's Famous Roti/Curry, where Guyanese couple Famena and Mohamad Ally win hearts and fill bellies.

The couple is known for their wit, charm and flavourful cooking, serving an assortment of regular customers along with plenty of newbies who have followed their nose (or found one of their many rave reviews on "the internet," as Famena would say) to this unique space, which is sandwiched between the entrance and exit of a parkade.

The slow-braised oxtail is a must – so rich and comforting, while the now-legendary roti are nearly the size of a football, brimming with curried potatoes, chickpeas, vegetables and almost any sort of stewed meat you like (all-vegetarian fillings available too).

And that hot sauce? As Famena says to Mike, "It's fire.... When he tries this his colour is going to change to this red bottle, so he won't need to go to the gym or go tan."

Be sure to pull up a seat and watch the delicious show unfold next time you are in Winnipeg.

Famena's Famous Roti/Curry is open Monday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. You can also order takeout by calling 204.414.9040.
