Sweet Impressions Bakery has cornered the market on modern nostalgia.

It taps into the sentiments of a visit to Grandma's kitchen while minding current baking trends.

Cupcakes, fondant enrobed cakes, immaculately decorated sugar cookies stock the counter and shelves in this 100 per cent nut-free bakery, kitchen studio and gift boutique.

Dairy and egg-free sweets are also for sale or can be special ordered.

Cupcake varieties change every day. Between two to four kinds are sold daily. Black Chocolate and Vanilla Yum are six days a week. (Sweet Impressions is closed Mondays.) On other days you'll also find Chunky Monkey, Carrot Supreme, Cinnamon Twist, Red Velvet and Orange Cranberry, to name a few.

The Black Chocolate cupcake is a deep, dense and divine cocoa cake topped with luscious whipped chocolate icing. The sweet icing is a great counterpoint to the semi-sweet cake.

The sugar cookies are also a sight to behold. Snow men, ice skates, mittens, owls, cars and Christmas trees are a few of the ever-changing selection of divinely decorated treats. The shop also offers custom cookies for all occasions including birthdays, baby showers and weddings.

Located beside the Manitoba Electrical Museum (yes, it exists) in a strip mall, Sweet Impressions is a great spot to pick up edible and non-edible travel gifts for friends and family back home. (The Winnipeg Jets sugar cookies are perfect for any hockey fanatic.)

Sweet Impressions is the dream shop for baking fanatics. Inside you will find frilled aprons, cookie cutters in impossibly cute shapes (train, ice cream cone, lady bug, whale, car, bear, etc.), children's baking kits and decorating accoutrements (fondant rollers with different designs, icing stencils and kitchen kitsch) for sale.

The business was launched in 2008 on Tache Avenue in St. Boniface. Within a couple of years, the popular bakery outgrew its location. The move to the Stafford Street location expanded the operation to include more decorating classes, birthday parties and special events.
