A visit to the kitchen at Chew restaurant yields one heck of a surprise—a five-month-old baby boy sitting in a corner playpen.

Baby Charlie, son of owners Kyle Lew and Kristen Chemerika-Lew, is a daily presence in the River Heights-area eatery. While his parents are busy feeding diners, Charlie and his nanny hang out and play in the corner. Come nap time, the nanny fills the sink, rolls up her sleeves and starts washing dishes.

The whole arrangement gives new meaning to 'mom and pop joint.'

Charlie and the nanny/ dishwasher arrangement is just one fun fact Peg City Grub learned while on a quick visit to the Waterloo Street bistro.

Meeting rather than eating was the purpose of this stop at the seven-table establishment.

Kristen, 27, is a born and raised Winnipegger, while 29-year-old Kyle's home is Toronto. The two met at cooking school at George Brown College and have been together eight years.

Located in the former home of Santa Lucia's original location, Kyle and Kristen hope the pizzeria's 38-year history at the strip mall is good karma for their new restaurant.

A rave review, recently written by Winnipeg Free Press restaurant critic Marion Warhoft will help meet that goal. (Read her review here.)

Chew, which is an amalgamation of their last names, features a menu that is earthy yet sophisticated.

Think black-truffle, mushroom perogies, saffron cauliflower with preserved lemons, crispy pork belly with beet cubes, and grilled bison petites tender with bone-marrow butter, to name a few menu highlights.

Desserts like caramelized banana cake with bacon ice cream and brown butter ice cream with espresso balsamic also peak interest.

Chew is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. With only are seven tables and 21 seats and a lot of buzz in the local food community, dinner reservations will soon become a must.
