Stella's Cafe and Bakery at the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson Airport serves from-scratch favorites like this roast chicken sandwhich to hungry travelers.

There was a time, in the not so distant past, when airport food was as grim as the meals served in the air.

Not anymore.

Today, in many airports around the world, food is haute cuisine.

As more people fly, high-quality cuisine is one more amenity travelers expect and demand. Many airports around the world meet those expectations.

In Winnipeg, our new state-of-the-art airport—the greenest terminal in North America—delivers delicious food for modest budgets.

Winnipeg's James Richardson International Airport boasts quality, home-grown restaurants and international chains that will satisfy weary travelers.

Salisbury House, Red Wok, Gondola Pizza, Starbucks, TGIFridays, Upper Crust, Tim Hortons and Stella's Café and Bakery have all set up shop inside.

At Stella's, located on the departures level outside security, the menu is populated with soups, sandwiches, burgers, pastas and curries.

Like its six sister locations across the city, the airport eatery lands hearty meals replete with vibrant flavours and skilled spicing that taste home-cooked, but even better.

On a recent visit, an unexpected six-hour delay sent our family to Stella's bosom. We craved honest food that would fuel us for the 16-hour journey we were about to undertake.

A roast chicken sandwich with cranberry sauce, mayonnaise and lettuce was just the ticket. Served on a faintly nutty, whole wheat bread, this two-hander was loaded with thick slices of chicken breast and smeared with tangy, cranberry sauce loaded with plump cranberry jewels. An accompanying Caesar salad was mighty garlicky and lemony. On any other day (say one where I didn't miss two flights and then had to run, full-speed through Toronto's Pearson Airport pushing a stroller, or sit shoulder to shoulder with strangers while I worried about bad breath), the intense garlic-goodness would have been greatly appreciated.

Meanwhile, my husband tucked into a divine pesto shrimp linguine. Creamy, smooth and with a hint of sweetness, he gobbled up this generous plate.

We left satiated—the from-scratch meals were just what were needed to face an epic day of travelling. Stella's at the airport is open from 5:30 a.m. to midnight every day. A quick-service kiosk serves to-go food 24-hours a day.
