12 deliciously unique drinks to try in Winnipeg right now

By: Riley Chervinski // February 11, 2021

Thirst trap alert... It's about to get steamy because we have a hot new list of drinks to get you through this cold snap.

If you are a Peg City Grub regular, you already know that Winnipeg's dining scene is both delicious and diverse. But, we sometimes forget to mention all the incredible drinks that go along with it.

We listed the tastiest cocktails and beers in The best things we drank in 2020 should you be looking for a tipple, and now we're talking about all the newest coffee, teas, smoothies, sodas and halo-halo (yes, cold drinks too; this is the slurpee capitol of the world after all) which we hope will see you sippin'.

                                                                                       ***

Café Postal's latté sucre à la crème. We suggest savouring this Festival du Voyageur-inspired drink while exploring the snow sculptures lining Provencher Boulevard or wandering around Whittier Park. They've also made a vegan alternative with a coconut base which sounds equally as delicious.

Mais con yelo halo from Champs food truck (currently operating out of Charlee's Restaurant and Lounge). Literally meaning “corn with ice”, this drink consists of cream-based slush blended with creamed corn, poured over a sweet corn mix and topped with sago (tapioca pearls), vanilla ice cream and pinipig.

Cloud Mylk's maple cashew plant-based milk. These organic, pastel-hued vegan milks launched in 2020, offering a great natural, locally made option for milk alternatives. Other menu items include mint chocolate milk and an almond and Brazil nut creamer.

Nutella mocha from Modern Coffee. This North End coffee shop is known for its cool latte art and tasty selection of beverages, and this chocolate hazelnut beverage is no exception.

Modern Electric Lunch's February drink special is a chocolate peanut butter latte made with vanilla bourbon syrup, chocolate peanut butter and almond whipped cream. Need we say more?

Mango Oreo float from Instagram eatery @bake_mie. This is more dessert than drink, but it was simply too good not to include in this list. Layers of crushed Oreos, chunks of mango and graham crumbs in a house-made milk mixture.

Hot apple cider from Joy Coffee Bar. Made with fresh apples and cinnamon, it's the ideal winter drink for a walk through nearby Assiniboine Park.

Sea moss smoothies or island sodas (with flavours including strawberry, ginger, sorrel and kola champagne) from Diaspora Cafe. This bright and spacious spot in St. Boniface was born out of an idea to highlight Caribbean and African desserts alongside coffee, teas and smoothies.

Kombucha from Wolseley Kombucha or Prism Kombucha. Both offer fun flavours of the fermented tea beverage, including root beer and jasmine (Wolseley) and boreal blueberry and chai (Prism).

Zobo, a hibiscus tea beverage made in Winnipeg by Street Food World. It's available at a number of grocery marts in the city as well as AFV Express. Zobo is a popular drink in Nigeria and throughout West Africa, and consists of four main ingredients: vibrant purple hibiscus leaves, spice from fresh or dried ginger, pineapple and simple syrup. This post from Street Food World explains it best.

L'Arche Tova Café's dark roast coffee and homemade cinnamon bun combo. It's $4.50, it's delicious and the social enterprise provides meaningful employment to people living with disabilities.

Jeepney's cucumber calamansi juice or strawberry wintermelon cheese smoothie with boba. Actually, any of Jeepney's milk teas, iced teas and juices will do. The modern Filipino eatery also serves Iskrambol (aka ice scrambled), which puts to shame anything that comes out of the machines at Sev.
