GABRIELA MONTERO, piano
Scenes from Childhood
The Season Finale: The day after two concerto evenings with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the indefatigable Gabriela Montero, performs a very special afternoon recital on our stage. Her visionary interpretations and unique improvisational gifts have won her a devoted following around the world. It’s no surprise, given that “Montero’s playing has everything – crackling rhythmic brio, subtle shadings, steely power in climactic moments, soulful lyricism in the ruminative passages and, best of all, unsentimental expressivity.” (New York Times) Born in Venezuela, she was appointed the first “Honorary Consul” of Amnesty International for her sustained advocacy of human rights in her homeland. She currently resides in Barcelona.
Program:
Schumann: Kinderszenen, Op. 15;
Chick Corea: Selections from Children’s Songs;
Montero: Scenes from Childhood;
Shostakovich: Sonata No. 2, Op. 61;
