This past summer, Qaumajuq at the Winnipeg Art Gallery was featured on TIME magazine’s “World’s Greatest Places 2021” cover.

Since opening in early spring, this stunning home to the world’s largest collection of contemporary Inuit art has been lavished praise in by everything from the New York Times, Forbes and Smithsonianmag.com (to name but a few). Within its snow-drift like façade, you’ll encounter a huge glass vault that provides an immersive viewing experience for its collection of sculptures. INUA, its first exhibit, was created by an all-Inuit curatorial team and features an astounding range of works, from tapestries, to paintings, to a seal-skin space suit. Qaumajuq is truly a gift to the city, while also providing a bridge between North and South and a home for reconciliation while celebrating Inuit artistry.   Within the WAG proper, which is openly connected to Qaumajuq’s exhibit spaces, you’ll also find great works representing Canadian art, Indigenous art and a collection that spans the Renaissance to contemporary works.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is always set to inspire. Its architecture alone is worth the trip, with famed alabaster ramps that form a Hogwarts-like labyrinth while connecting spaces that emphasize darkness and light, vastness and intimacy. You can see the museum on the $10 bill, along with Viola Desmond, whose story you’ll find in the museum. Other exhibits on now include ARTiculate Our Rights, Ododo Wa: Stories of Girls in War and Truth and Reconciliation.

The Royal Canadian Mint is always staging tours that are worth every penny (a joke that we should take out of circulation, much like the penny itself), highlighting how millions of coins are made for countries around the world.
