There was no obstacle more frustrating for early Canadian bush pilots than the cold weather. In the 1920s and 1930s, the promise of vast untapped resources in the Canadian North created a demand for reliable transport into the Arctic. Battling the cold, Canadian air pioneers pushed the boundaries of the limited technology of the day, navigating by sight in a land the same colour as the sky, and coaxing their frozen engines to life with open-flame torches.
