Every neighbourhood has a cozy café that feels homey but the food is like nothing you can make in your own kitchen.
In Winnipeg's French Quarter, Promenade Café and Wine fills that niche. Located at the threshold to St. Boniface on the corner of Tache Avenue and Provencher Boulevard, Promenade Café serves modern French food with nods to tradition.
There are loads of reasons to love this spot, here are my top-5:
The View: Promenade's view is hard to beat. From their seats in the dining room, guest can spy downtown high-rises, the Forks, the Red River, Shaw Park (home of the Goldeyes baseball team), the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and Esplanade Riel, Winnipeg's iconic cable walking bridge.
French Onion Soup: Promenade's version of this traditional winter staple is stout and hardy. Thick-cut Gruyere—melted and grilled just right—tops this soul warmer.
Hassle-free holiday shopping with perks: Everyone loves a deal. Promenade Café has a great one, just in time for the holidays. Right now you can buy a $100 gift card and receive a $20 gift card to treat yourself too.
Shawn and Connie McKane-Brandson: Promenade's owners have been in Winnipeg's food scene for decades and are passionate supporters of local producers. They also have great ideas. Earlier this fall, they hosted Winnipeg's inaugural Poutine Cup at Fort Gibraltar. Ten local restaurants put their best poutine forward while 400 guests enjoyed live music and nibbled on the Quebecois 'delicacy.'
Breakfast, lunch and dinner: It's ridiculous to name everything worth adoring on Promenade's menu so instead here are a few favourites. For breakfast, tuck into crêpes with Nutella and fresh fruit. Order coq au vin or bison tourtière for lunch. At dinner, slow-roasted lamb shank with truffled chick peas, shiitake mushrooms and blue cheese calls.
