If you take a trip to the Half Moon Drive In, expect to take a trip back through time too.
This old timey drive in opened its doors in 1938. The 76-year-old hamburger joint is an institution around these parts.
Half Moon is a 40-minute drive north from downtown Winnipeg. The distance isn't a deterrent for locals who happily hop in their rides and head to the country for a decidedly unpretentious meal.
The diner decor is as important to the experience as the plastic trays loaded with hot dogs, fries, onion rings and milkshakes. It's an episode of Happy Days come to life. Black and white photos are hung throughout alongside newspaper clippings depicting Half Moon's long history in the hot dog business.
And hot dogs are Half Moon's bread and butter. First timers must order the Moon Dog, a dog loaded with cheese, bacon, fried onions, pickles and mustard. For the famished, indulge in the Foot-Long, a 12-inch wiener. For the starving, order a Deluxe Dog, a three-wiener monster. Make sure to order onions and fries at Half Moon, to complete the drive-in experience.
In the summer, take your vittles out back to one of the many picnic tables on the back lawn overlooking the Red River.
Or take a booth inside and immerse yourself in the Half Moon universe, minutes from Winnipeg but decades away.
Half Moon is open 11 months a year, closing mid-December to mid-January.
