Winnipeg is in the midst of a farmers' market explosion. In 2013, it was the year of the food truck. In 2014, farmers' markets rule the food kingdom.
The city boasts 12 official farmers' markets according to the Farmers' Market Association of Manitoba. But that number (so far) doesn't count several new markets that have sprung up just lately.
Last year, the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ launched its own Thursday market at the Manitoba Hydro Building. A second weekly downtown market is in the works. The season wraps up October 9.
Provencher BIZ in St. Boniface—Winnipeg's French Quarter—hopes to launch its own farmers' market this fall. The market is in the planning stages but local business leaders are working hard to make it happen.
And now we can add The Forks Farmers' Market to the mix of markets in Winnipeg. This Sunday market features a aid variety of food, fresh produce, gifts and artisanal foodstuffs.
The Sundays only schedule fills a hole in the local famers' market calendar. No markets were scheduled for the seventh day of the week until the Forks launched its market in early June.
Like other local markets, you'll find fresh, in-season produce, jams, jellies, cookies, slices and other sweets. Handmade soaps and lotions, wooden toys, bedding plants and flowers, and vintage clothes and kids wear round out the stock, among other items. The market is never the same way twice. If you find something you must have, don't wait because it may not be there the next hour, much less the next week.
The Forks Farmers' Market runs every Sunday (weather permitting) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
