Many of the events bring together the city’s top food makers and shapers. Here’s a list of upcoming food events in Winnipeg:
The Forks Farmers' Market: Every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Winnipeg's newest farmers' market launched in mid-May with great fanfare. The outdoor market is located just beside the Original Pancake House and fills a hole in the weekend farmers' market scene. Fresh produce, baked goods, specialty meats, pickles and preserves are plentiful here.
St. Norbert Farmers' Market:
Opening during the day Saturday May 24 to October 25
Open Saturdays to October 25 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Open Wednesdays until September 24 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Located just south of Winnipeg in St. Norbert, this local market has been in business for 26 years. This is the go-to market for Winnipeggers, home-cooks, chefs and restaurateurs on the hunt for Manitoba's freshest produce. Go early on Saturdays for the best selection and expect big crowds on the warmest days of summer. Insider's tip: Quench your thirst with a made-to-order fresh lemonade.
Table for 1,200: Saturday May 31, 7 p.m.
Call it Winnipeg's largest outdoor dinner party. The menu and location are top secret. Guests will find out where to go just an hour before dinner time. By 7 p.m., 1,200 guests will converge downtown for a meal by top local chefs Ben Kramer (Diversity Foods) and Mandel Hitzer (Deer+Almond and RAW:Almond). The one-time-only event is the work of Storefront MB and 5468796 Architecture and is the culmination of a year-long, around the world project bringing together great minds in architecture over a meal. In Winnipeg, the 365-metre long table will be populated with folks of all stripes and backgrounds out to enjoy a fantastic meal during a unforgettable urban event. For more information, click here.
Chefs en plein air 2014: June 5
More than 300 guests will dine among the ruins at the historic St. Boniface Cathedral, one of Winnipeg's most remarkable landmarks. Seven top city chefs will serve a multi-course dinner as guests sip wine and celebrate the city's thriving Francophone culture. Red River Exhibition: June 13- 24
Mini-donuts, cotton candy and deep-fried everything are a given at Winnipeg's annual fair and exhibition. But the Red River Ex turned a culinary corner in 2013, adding The Expressway. This tented area is populated with healthier food options including sandwiches, wraps, smoothies and salads. In 2014, the Ex is adding more vendors to The Expressway including ethnic cuisines like Thai, Portuguese, Ethiopian and Greek.
