Short of working in one of Winnipeg's downtown highrises, getting a grand view of the city is a difficult prospect.

That's why it was so thrilling when Winnipeg's revolving restaurant was reborn after being shuttered for several years.

Prairie 360 Skyline Restaurant & Lounge opened on the top four floors of Fort Garry Place in mid-November 2013. Since then, locals and visitors alike have drunk in the 360˚ view of the prairie city. The revolution takes about 70 minutes. We may not have a mountain or ocean view, but the Canadian Prairies and the vast sky are breathtaking in their own right.

Guests start their visit on the 28th floor where reception is located, as is the piano bar and whisky lounge.

Embarrassing confession: Whisky and Scotch aren't my thing, so appreciating the 147 brands stocked in the lounge is lost on me. That said, it is impressive. I'm motivated by cocktails and an intelligently curated wine list.

Prairie 360 is smart. The restaurant and lounge stock an estimated 240 spirits and 200 bottles of wine. I tried a cocktail and two glasses of wine.

It's not especially important what I sipped because frankly, I was mesmerized by the view. I could have been drinking anything short of dirty dish water and still have been impressed. That said, my cocktail (the "St. Boniface," with calvados, gin, lemon juice, dill, celery bitters and simple syrup) was sublime, and my Sauvignon blanc hit the spot both times.

Here's what you need to know: Prairie 360 is a fantastic space to settle in for a tipple, a snifter or a sip. It really has no competition for setting. That alone should get you pressing the elevator button to the 28th floor for a pitstop before heading upstairs to 30 for the main course and revolving view.

Come back soon for the low down on dining at Prairie 360 in an upcoming post.
