Manyfest Food Truck Wars
Lately, Winnipeg has been a battle ground, albeit a delicious one, for several food fights.
Burger Week, CBC Information Radio's Classic Burger contest and Manyfest's Food Truck Wars all went down during the first week of September.
During Burger Week, about 30 local restaurants created signature burgers. The only rules? Burgers had to be topped with cheese and cost $10 or less.
Unburger took the Burger Week crown. Runners up included Saigon Jon's and Table Manners, a pop-up burger stand that served burgers from Bistro 7 1/4 and The Neon Factory.
At Manyfest, Downtown Winnipeg BIZ's annual wrap-up to summer, organizers launched Food Truck Wars. Memorial Drive was the battle field as twelve food trucks fought for the title of Winnipeg's favourite food truck. Stuff-It Foods won people's choice award at Manyfest's Food Truck Wars. Judge's picks Pimp my Rice, On a Roll and Vilai's Spice Box also stood out from the pack.
The same week, CBC's Information Radio hunted for Winnipeg's best classic burger. Locals voted online to nominate their top-five burger joints from a field of 30. Three judges, Winnipeg Free Press columnist Doug Speirs, Winnipeg Burger Club founder Tim Turner and Peg City Grub, were pressed into action. We took a blind taste test of the top-five burgers and Dairi-Wip Drive-In emerged as the winner. Mrs. Mike's placed second and VJ's took third. Here's the story.
Winners of all three contests won bragging rights.
The real winners? Food lovers who scarfed down fantastic eats.
