Perhaps it was the moment we sipped iced coffees on the lawn of the Manitoba Legislature. Or it could have been when we gulped a well-earned cold beer on Don Pedros sidewalk patio in the Exchange District. Or it's even possible magic happened as we peddled up to Central Park to the island tones of a steel drum band as daylight faded.
Truth is, there were too many magical moments to count during Moveable Feast, a new cycling and dining event hosted by the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ and the folks from Bike-to-Work Week.
The inaugural event, held June 20th, saw 50 cycling foodies peddling en mass through Winnipeg's downtown core on a five-hour culinary and history tour that started at the province's seat of government and wound its way around downtown, The Forks and the Exchange District. Tickets cost $30 each and the event sold out.
Iced coffee by Thom Bargen, one of Winnipeg's newest boutique java houses, started the adventure.
Then the hungry masses peddled to The Forks where nibbles like Tomato Basil Flatbread with goat cheese (see picture below) whet appetites. Back in the saddle, the tour took to the banks of the Red River along The Forks, took a right turn at Esplanade Riel and feasted on Manitoba mushroom perogies, poutine and mini tourtieres.
Mexican at Don Pedros in the east Exchange District and a to-go sweet treat from Cakeology fueled part of the route. Stops at Central Park, East India Company (butter chicken, mmmmm), Millenium Library Park and Rudy's for peanut butter Nutella cheesecake finished the calorie-friendly journey.
The peddle party was a huge success, said Jason Syvixay of Downtown Winnipeg BIZ.
Indeed, Moveable Feast captures the best of a Winnipeg summer: seeing the city from the seat of a bicycle, exploring great neighbourhoods and sampling some great food along the way.
Don't worry if you missed the inaugural event, Syvixay promises more Moveable Feasts are in the works, possibly this summer.
In the meantime, take a look at some of the highlights from the feast on wheels.
