Mrs. Mike's: Retro Burger Shack -

Mrs. Mike's: Retro Burger Shack

Mrs. Mike's: Retro Burger Shack

Load up on plenty of napkins to tackle Mrs. Mike's Kingburger. This double burger is a two-hander with all the fixings including lettuce, onion and tomato.

Mrs. Mike's Address: 286 Taché Avenue Phone: 204-237-3977 Neighbourhood: St. Boniface

If you order a Kingburger at Mrs. Mike's, there's one side dish you need more than fries.

Napkins.

That's a testament to St. Boniface institution's biggest and juicest creation.

The massive, double burger will slay any appetite. Loaded with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and oodles of mayo and mustard, it's an old-school, straight-up drive-in burger on steroids.

The menu at the red and white Taché Avenue burger shack is succinct and doesn't go in for modern machinations of the burger. You won't find any Kobe beef, caramelized onions, artisan cheeses or other fancy burger accoutrement on this menu. Bacon is even verboten here.

mrs-mikes-friesInstead, burgers, cheeseburgers, chili burgers and hot dogs make the meal. Chicken fingers and fries are as fancy as it gets. Lettuce and tomatoes on your burger is also the closest thing you'll get to a salad here. One-size-fits-all, thin-cut fries are served in white paper bags and best devoured with lots of ketchup, vinegar and salt.

Saddle up to a banana split or a milkshake for dessert. There are eight milkshake flavours to choose from including all the favourites and a few off the beaten path like lime, pineapple and blueberry.

mrs-mikes-pickupOrder at the front window and pick up at the side window. Staff are friendly and service is fast. It's a good bet the abbreviated menu helps move orders through quickly. Eat at one of the picnic tables or settle back into your car. On my visit, many patrons parked and ate their burgers on site.

Located just off Marion Street in the heart of St. Boniface's commercial and retail strip, Mrs. Mike's has a loyal clientele who happily line up for their burger and fries fix.

Drive-in burger joints often try to cash in on nostalgia, sometimes to the detriment of taste. Not Mrs. Mike's. The food is honest and unadorned but gosh darn it, it's just plain good.

Closed Sundays and Mondays. Cash only. No debit or credit cards.
