Eat, Drink & Be Merry

Discover Winnipeg’s unique neighbourhoods as you search for the ultimate in taste-tempting food.

Day 1
Archaeologists believe the land at the intersection of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers was a gathering place for indigenous people 6,000 years ago. Today The Forks, as it is known, is a bustling centre of dining, entertainment and shopping. The Forks Market is a food emporium with a mix of ethnic restaurants and made-in-Manitoba food items. The aroma of cinnamon buns leads you to Tall Grass Prairie Bakery, where you can bake your own loaf of bread and enjoy the samples. Or try your hand at regional cooking with the Chef of The Current Restaurant at the Inn at The Forks.

Develop your culinary skills under the expert guidance of the instructors at De Luca’s Cooking Studio as they demonstrate a variety of authentic Italian dishes. The Manitoba Japanese Cultural Centre offers tips on sushi rolling and the art of presentation.

Chocolates lovers should make the pilgrimage to Mordens’ of Winnipeg. Celebrating 50 years as Winnipeg’s revered chocolatier, Mordens’ is famous for their signature chocolate, the Russian Mint. The chocolate manufacturing plant is located behind their storefront on Sargent Avenue.

Winnipeg’s ethnic food restaurants not only serve the best of their cultural cuisine, but feature international dishes influenced by Manitoba’s regional cuisine flavours.

Try one-of-a-kind dining spots such as Alycia’s for traditional Ukrainian fare, Homer’s for Greek souvlaki, and Ivory Restaurant for a “Bollywood” extravaganza. Corydon Avenue, also known as “Little Italy”, is noted for its popular patio restaurants, gelaterias and bars. Over the past decade, the area has changed from predominately Italian cuisine to include tastes from around the world. Soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the sights and sounds as you stroll the avenue.

Day 2
For a glimpse into Winnipeg’s past, head to The Exchange District National Historic Site, a 30-block neighbourhood comprised of stunning architecture, where a large portion of the city’s vibrant arts and culture scene can be found along with bustling restaurants and trendy boutiques.

Food offerings range from tender racks of lamb at the stately British club setting of Bailey’s and artfully-arranged sushi at Bluefish to South American-style steaks at Hermano’s Restaurant and Wine Bar and mouth-watering desserts at artsy coffee houses.

Travel the world with Banville & Jones’ international wine and food pairing evenings. Located in the neighbourhood of St. Vital, Banville and Jones is a Tuscan-inspired wine store with more than 3,000 bottles of wine, gifts and gourmet items from around the world. Wine taste on the terrace, sample some of the favourite wines with a selection of Manitoba-produced Bothwell cheeses in the Tuscan Room, or partake in the cooking and wine-tasting classes featuring some of Winnipeg’s finest Chefs.

Osborne Village is a densely populated enclave boasting an eclectic and electric dining, shopping and nightlife scene. Stop at Carlos & Murphy’s cozy cantina, Fude’s for upscale casual dining, Baked Expectations for decadent desserts, Meiji for sushi and Toad in the Hole for British pub fare.

And watch for products created by Half Pints Brewery Company -- like their locally brewed British-style amber ale, India pale ale and hearty stout featured at many Winnipeg’s bars and restaurants.
