Dreams & Diversity

Winnipeg is the Culture Capital of Canada 2010 and just the place for those who have a passion for the arts.

Day 1
Discover tales of bravery and sheer tenacity of European immigrants who came to Manitoba as they unfold in the Grasslands Gallery at The Manitoba Museum - a showcase of Winnipeg’s multiculturalism. Then experience the “joie de vivre” or joy of life of the voyageurs at Fort Gibraltar, Theatre in the Cemetery, Riel House and Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site.

In the evening, enjoy award-winning dramas, comedies, musicals and classics in the intimate setting of the Manitoba Theatre Centre. Be moved by the poignant tragedies of the Manitoba Opera or choose a pops concert featuring Broadway show tunes and popular orchestral pieces, masterworks or the classics performed by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra for a wonderful evening of music.

Day 2
Start the day at Assiniboine Park’s Leo Mol Sculpture Garden, which offers a quiet retreat in a natural setting for viewers to contemplate the magnificent works of Dr. Leo Mol, an internationally acclaimed master sculptor. Then explore the visual language of artists and examine the influences of art in society at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, home of the Jazz on the Rooftop concert series.

And if your timing is right, you can see captivating performances of the world-acclaimed Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet, whose productions include Dracula, Nutcracker, Wonderland and Moulin Rouge. Learn about the precise art of dance and take a peek at the wardrobe and shoe department, just part of the behind-the-scenes tour offered by Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet School.

During the first two weeks of August you are invited to take in the sights and sounds of Folklorama, the largest and longest running multicultural event of its kind in the world. More than 44 pavilions representing various cultures that make up Manitoba’s mosaic, open their doors each evening to showcase ethno-cultural entertainment, food and drink along with fascinating displays whcih depict lifestyles prior to emigration.
