The Fort, built in 1738 by the French Explorer Pierre Gaultier de la Verendrye, depicts the life of Prairie Pioneers in Manitoba. Visit the pioneer village with print shop, general store, the Ukrainian Catholic Church and the 1881 school where Mary Louise Pickering taught. See the actual 1882 railcar used by William Van Horne when building the CPR and explore several turn-of-the-last century homes, including the 1881 home of former Premier Douglas Campbell. Here you will also find the Manitoba Softball Hall of Fame and Museum, a military museum and the world’s largest indoor display of Allis-Chalmers farm equipment.

The museum is open annually mid-May to mid-September from 9 am to 6 pm (Sundays from noon)  The Portage Tourist Bureau is open year round with reduced hours (9am - 4 pm) during the off season.
