I Love Winnipeg's Diversity

When I moved downtown to be closer to my job, I had no idea the world I'd discover.

Living in downtown Winnipeg has opened my world to a wonderful and exciting group of people: Bhutanese newcomers.

A few years ago, Canada opened their doors to Bhutanese refugees living in camps in Nepal. They were there for almost 20 years after Bhutan kicked them out. Canada opened her doors, and Winnipeg suddenly found a growing Bhutanese population.

Once I moved downtown, I explored ways to make this my community. I started visiting Central Park and explored the diversity of the neighbourhood. I felt at home with the 100s of newcomers in the newly renovated park. My world was challenged as I recognized that I'd won the lottery - I was born in Winnipeg and how truly fortunate I am!

It was there that I met my first Bhutanese family. I could no longer close my eyes to the suffering of others, to the denial of human rights and pain that millions suffer worldwide while I live in such a wonderful city. I found my world expanded as I became grateful for my city, while becoming wholeheartedly committed to the worldwide community.

Our city - and all of its diversity and culture - hosts newcomers from all over the world. We welcome them, and they enrich this wonderful city.

I am now friends with many Bhutanese newcomers. My world has changed, and downtown has become my community. I have learned the value of family, democracy, and the incredible opportunities that thrive in this city.

I found a community in Winnipeg that embraces me, and encourages me to grow. I have a career that provides endless opportunities, and encourages me to volunteer. I have a family that lives in all areas of the city and allows me to discover the beauty of neighbourhoods.

I love my home: Winnipeg.

Sincerely,
Jean Dalman
