Launch of new culinary tourism intiative to kick off tourism week in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG, MB–You can start the day with a breakfast burrito, tuck into a barbequed pork báhn mì for lunch and carve up a grilled-to-perfection strip loin inside a slick Brazilian steakhouse for dinner.

Winnipeg is loaded with incredible restaurants on every block. But how do you decide where to eat?

Enter pegcitygrub.com, a new culinary tourism blog by Tourism Winnipeg that celebrates Winnipeg's world-class food and restaurant scene, reveals the latest food trends and profiles the star chefs behind the culinary masterpieces.

Peg City Grub will be unveiled Monday May 14th at 11:30 a.m. at The Forks Market centre court during a media conference to officially launch Tourism Week, which runs May 14th to 21st across Canada.

Manitoba Food Bloggers members and media are invited to sample global cuisine from Forks vendors during a complimentary lunch, and watch a regional cuisine cooking demonstration by Chef Michael Schafer of Sydney's at the Forks and Rudy's Eat and Drink. Bloggers and media are encouraged to tweet and blog about the event using hash tags #pegcitygrub and #pegtourismweek.

"Trying indigenous eats in a new place is a big part of the lure of travel and Winnipeg has countless culinary adventures waiting to be had. Peg City Grub is a go-to place to start your food experiences in Winnipeg," says Chantal Sturk-Nadeau, senior vice president of Tourism Winnipeg.

"Winnipeg has incredible restaurants representing every kind of cuisine. Peg City Grub helps visitors and locals find the food they're craving," says Scott Jocelyn, executive director of the Manitoba Restaurant & Foodservices Association.

The launch of Peg City Grub coincides with Tourism Week, a Canada-wide initiative that highlights the vital impact of travel and tourism in the country.

"Winnipeg has a thriving tourism industry that employs more than 40,000 people. Tourism is the second largest employment sector of the city's 10 key industries," says Marina R. James, president and CEO of Economic Development Winnipeg Inc. "Tourism Week highlights the value of tourism to the local economy. With 2.8 million visitors coming to Winnipeg every year, the benefits to Winnipeg’s economy are immense.”

From May 14th to 21st, Tourism Winnipeg hosts activities and events showcasing the economic impact and social benefits of Winnipeg's important tourism sector.

On Tuesday May 15th, tourism, travel and industry insiders will lead free, public forums and panel discussions highlighting Winnipeg’s tourism products from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Winnipeg Free Press News Café (237 McDermot Avenue).
