Innovation of the Year
Winnipeg Tourism Innovation of the Year Award of Distinction
Presented to an individual, organization, business or marketing consortium in recognition of a new tourism product/service/process or approach that increases tourism to Winnipeg.
In 2015, FortWhyte Alive set out to target a new market -- adults 25-35 – by creating new, authentic outdoor experiences such as hatchet throwing, craft nights, homesteading workshops, The Lake Shaker outdoor winter party for adults only and The Great Escape -- Winnipeg’s first summer camp for adults. These new initiatives have resulted in increased media exposure and new opportunities in the travel trade market. FortWhyte Alive’s Facebook followers increased 92% in 2015 and a 485% increase in followers on Instagram.
Fun Mountain – Fear the Sliding Dead
Fear the Sliding Dead turned Fun Mountain into a new, scary Halloween experience in 2015. It was a live action zombie apocalypse featuring role playing with zombies. Guides led groups through the darkness and more than 3,700 guests “survived” this sold-out, week-long event. It was the first time the massive waterpark was used during the off-season, which generated a new revenue stream. The promotional video had 1,500 shares on Facebook, including 8,200 views outside Winnipeg, making it the most shared Winnipeg promotion video in Facebook history.
