The Business Development Manager is responsible for prospecting leads, networking at a senior level with decision makers, and ultimately, closing the sale to increase tourism revenues for Winnipeg. This position reports to the Senior Vice President. An enthusiastic, results-oriented sales professional responsible for increasing overnight visitation to Winnipeg in the meetings and conventions market. • Undertake responsibility for business development in required markets
• Lead growth in markets as identified in the strategic plan
• Strengthen customer relationships and develop new business opportunities
• Lead team industry sales efforts - attend marketplaces, trade shows and sales initiatives in designated markets
• Develop and execute daily, monthly and quarterly action plans for specific market and industry segments
• Adjust selling tactics to market changes
• Lead committee meetings with tourism industry partners
• Develop relationships and build partnerships with the local tourism and hospitality industry
• Develop and work on target lists to identify future opportunities
• Handle all clients in designated markets from initial contact through the actual booking
• Conduct daily prospecting sales calls to potential and existing clients (through cold calls and lead generation) to research meeting needs and determine Tourism Winnipeg’s role for meeting those needs and convert potential prospects into definite business for Winnipeg
• Prospect new leads using a variety of methods, including research, internet, industry directories, trade publications, and memberships
• Give oral presentations of Winnipeg’s value propositions at local, regional and national tourism events
• Maintain awareness of competing cities and the tourism industry (i.e. through trade publications, travel and relationships)
• Assist the sales and service team in the planning and execution of familiarization (FAM) tours, site inspections, client events and trade marketplaces as assigned
• Work with the Tourism Winnipeg team to provide services such as information, event planning advice, tool kits, welcome packages (e.g., Tourism Winnipeg marketing material) for national and international meetings and events occurring in the city
• Act as a liaison between the client and the facilities and/or hotels whenever Winnipeg is under consideration
• Manage a budget
• Work with SVP on setting and evaluating monthly targets
• Visit key conventions and events when held in the city and assure high client satisfaction, thus encouraging groups to return again
• Maximize collaboration with industry partners such as the RBC Convention Centre, attractions, hotels and off-site venues
• Utilize Simpleview (CRM) to maintain accurate and detailed records of prospect leads, new business, sales calls, and existing client interaction
• Produce accurate monthly sales reports
• Undertake special projects as required from the division
• Work responsibly in accordance with the Corporation’s Policy Playbook

• Travel required (30%)
• Must be available to work extended hours as required
• High degree of professionalism and dedication


• Proven track record and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in sales, account management and business development
• Post-secondary education from an accredited college or university in business/commerce
• Significant technical knowledge and experience in MS Office, Outlook, PowerPoint, Social Media and Internet research is required
