Business Development Manager, Tourism Winnipeg

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Business Development Manager is a key member responsible for prospecting leads, networking at a senior level within the industry, and ultimately, closing the sale to increase tourism to Winnipeg. This position reports to the Senior Vice President and is a dynamic, enthusiastic, results-oriented sales professional. Your passion for Winnipeg is matched by your outstanding track record in business development, keen ability in rapport building with diverse clients and a desire to help us raise the bar in attracting meetings, conventions and sport events to Winnipeg.


RESPONSIBILITIES/FUNCTIONS:

  • Implement strategies and actions in the business plan for Meetings and Conventions as well as Sports & Special Events;
  • Assist in selling all tourism products and services;
  • Assist with identifying market opportunities and developing short- and long-term marketing and sales strategies with the objective of attracting meetings, conventions and events;
  • Conduct direct sales efforts through sales calls (cold calls and lead generation), targeted sales missions, bids, proposals and convert leads to booked business;
  • Proactively prospect new leads using a variety of methods, including research using the internet, industry directories and trade publications;
  • Handle all clients in designated markets from initial contact through the actual booking;
  • Act as a liaison between the client and the facilities and/or hotels whenever Winnipeg is under consideration;
  • Visit key conventions and events when held in the city to ensure high client satisfaction, thus encouraging groups to return again;
  • Lead team industry sales efforts - attend marketplaces, trade shows and sales initiatives in designated markets;
  • Assist the Tourism Winnipeg sales and service team in the planning and execution of familiarization (FAM) tours, site inspections, client events and trade marketplaces as assigned;
  • Give oral presentations, as necessary, about Winnipeg’s tourism value propositions at local and national industry events, sponsored activities, business events and post-secondary institutions;
  • Work with the Tourism Winnipeg sales and service team to provide services such as information, event-planning advice, tool kits, welcome packages (e.g. Tourism Winnipeg marketing material) for national and international meetings and events occurring in the city;
  • Lead the preparation, coordination and content for the bids;
  • Effectively manage major, complicated bids involving negotiations with government and venues;
  • Lead the coordination of appropriate bid committees for major event opportunities (bid committee partners vary depending upon the client and venue);
  • Maximize collaboration with government organizations and the local tourism and hospitality industry;
  • Maximize collaboration with industry partners such as MTS Centre, the RBC Convention Centre and other venues, provincial and national sports associations, hotels and off-site venues;
  • Lead an advisory committee;
  • Maintain awareness of competing cities and the industry (i.e. through trade publications, travel and relationships);
  • Keep the team informed of all important developments;
  • Work with SVP on setting and evaluating monthly targets;
  • Undertake special projects as required;
  • Manage a budget;
  • Utilize the database to maintain accurate and detailed records of prospect leads, new business, sales calls, and existing client interaction;
  • Produce sales report for SVP, including minimum number of sales calls per week as directed.

  • Proven successful skills in account management, direct sales, sales presentations and trade show exhibiting;

  • Valid Driver’s license required;
  • Must be able to travel overnight, including travel outside of Manitoba and Canada;
  • Must be available to work extended hours in the evenings and weekends as required to represent Tourism Winnipeg at industry functions;
  • High degree of professionalism and dedication.


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Post-secondary education from an accredited college or university;
  • Minimum of 5 years in sales and account management;
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • French language would be an asset
